At A Glance: '20 Road Atlanta Hoosier Super Tour

Storylines/Things to Watch:

Return of Hoosier Super Tour to Georgia– While the Hoosier Racing Tire SCCA Super Tour is currently in its fourth season, the July 25-26 event at Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta is only the second time SCCA’s premier U.S. amateur road racing series has made a visit to the challenging 2.54-mile, 12-turn circuit in Braselton, Georgia. That being said, the multi-purpose motorsports facility situated on 750 acres in the rolling hills of Northeast Georgia has hosted numerous amateur and professional races over the years, and SCCA has been part of the track’s history since racing started there 50 years ago.

One-Off Race Weekend -- This year’s Hoosier Super Tour visit to Michelin Raceway Road Atlanta was originally scheduled for March. But like so many other things in 2020, the coronavirus pandemic threw a wrench in that plan. Undeterred, SCCA’s Atlanta Region -- host of this weekend’s Hoosier Super Tour -- worked to find a way to reschedule the visit. The result is a one-off event where Hoosier Super Tour car classes will share the circuit with South Atlantic Road Racing Championship regional car classes on Saturday and Sunday during the seven individual race groups.

Max Papis Supporting GT-3 Challenge -- Well-known pro racer Max Papis, of Max Papis Innovations (MPI), continues his backing of the GT-3 class this weekend with some support for reigning GT-3 national champion Jeff Dernehl. The coaching comes as a result of Dernehl’s GT-3 victory at last year’s Runoffs, which also netted him the 2019 GT-3 Challenge championship. GT-3 Challenge presented by MPI is a series boosting participation in the GT-3 class and is supported by Mazda, Max Papis Innovations, Penske Racing Shocks, AiM Sports, Hoosier Racing Tire, Goodyear Tire, Carbotech Performance Brakes and Bell Racing Helmets. The first GT-3 Challenge event of 2020 took place back in February during a Hoosier Super Tour weekend at California’s Buttonwillow Raceway Park. Since then, the five-event schedule had to be “massaged” a bit due to pandemic issues. But the GT-3 Challenge is back on track this weekend in Georgia, followed by August’s SCCA U.S. Major Tour date at Road America, and a late August Hoosier Super Tour stop at Pittsburgh International Race Complex. The GT-3 Challenge will then crown its 2020 champion at SCCA’s Runoffs® in October at Road America.
